What mistakes do students make in case-based questions?
1. Jumping to the questions
You scan for the answer and find something that looks right. But cases often include a detail that changes the answer. Fix: read the complete passage once before touching a sub-question.
2. Ignoring numbers, units and named details
A value, a condition or a named organism is usually there for a reason. Fix: underline them as you read and check that your answer uses at least one.
3. Answering from memory only
Writing a textbook definition that does not use the case earns partial marks at best. Fix: tie every answer to something in the passage.
4. Answering from the passage only
The reverse error: repeating what the case says without adding the underlying principle. Fix: add the concept or term that explains it.
5. Writing too much
Each sub-part is usually worth one or two marks. A paragraph wastes time and can introduce errors. Fix: match length to marks: one or two precise lines.
6. Not noticing that parts build on each other
A wrong assumption in part (i) carries into part (ii). Fix: after finishing, reread the case with your answers and check they tell a consistent story.
7. Panicking at unfamiliar contexts
A passage about an unusual device or situation can look new even when the concept is standard. Fix: ask "which chapter is this really about?" Strip away the story and the concept appears.
