Most students who practise PYQs are doing something right by simply doing it. But a handful of habits turn hours of practice into very little improvement. Here are the eight we see most, and how to fix each.
The biggest PYQ mistakes are looking at answers too early, not reviewing errors, only practising favourite chapters, and starting full papers too soon. Fix them by attempting first, labelling each mistake, tracking accuracy per chapter and revisiting missed questions after a gap.
What are the most common PYQ practice mistakes?
1. Reading the answer before attempting
It feels efficient. It is not. Without an attempt there is no retrieval, and retrieval is what builds memory. Fix: commit to an answer first, even a guess.
2. Counting marks but not analysing mistakes
A score of 32/40 tells you nothing about the 8 marks you lost. Fix: tag every mistake as concept gap, misreading or slip, and act on the tag.
3. Redoing wrong answers immediately
Repeating a question you just failed only tests short-term memory. Fix: revisit after two or three days, then a week later.
4. Practising only the chapters you like
Comfortable chapters feel good, and weak chapters get avoided. That is exactly backwards. Fix: let chapter-wise accuracy decide what you practise next. See how to find your weak areas.
5. Starting full papers too early
A full paper before you have covered the syllabus mostly measures what you have not studied yet. Fix: go chapter-wise first, papers later.
6. Solving too many years, too fast
Ten years skimmed teaches less than four years reviewed. Fix: see how many years of PYQs to solve.
7. Memorising options instead of understanding
If you remember that "the answer to that one was C", you have learned nothing. The board will reword the question. Fix: after each question, explain the concept in one sentence in your own words.
8. Ignoring written and case-based questions
MCQs are quick and satisfying, so they get all the attention while higher-mark written and case-based questions get skipped. Fix: give every format a share of your practice. See how to solve case-based questions.
What does good PYQ practice look like?
It looks a little slower than you expect: attempt, check, understand, note the reason, revisit later. Ten reviewed questions beat thirty rushed ones. The full routine is in how to practise Class 10 Science PYQs.
How can MindVsYou help avoid these mistakes?
MindVsYou is designed around the fixes: questions come one at a time so you cannot skim ahead to the answer; objective questions are marked with an explanation; written questions ask you to attempt before revealing the model answer and to rate yourself honestly; your accuracy is tracked chapter by chapter so weak chapters cannot hide; and revision modes bring back the MCQs and written questions you missed.
Frequently asked questions
What is the biggest mistake in PYQ practice?
Not reviewing mistakes. Attempting many questions without understanding why you missed some produces little improvement.
Is it okay to skip questions I find too hard?
Skipping occasionally is fine in a timed paper. In chapter practice, hard questions are the most valuable, so attempt them and study the explanation.
How do I know if I am practising PYQs the right way?
If your accuracy in a chapter rises over repeated attempts, and you can explain each answer in your own words, your practice is working.
