1. Missing NOT, EXCEPT or INCORRECT in the stem

"Which of the following is not a displacement reaction?" is answered wrongly by students who read the first half and spot a displacement reaction. Fix: underline negative words before reading the options.

2. Unit and sign slips in numericals

Focal length in centimetres but object distance in metres; the wrong sign for a concave mirror's focal length; resistance in kilo-ohms. Fix: write units next to every number and apply the sign convention deliberately.

3. Skimming diagrams

Ray diagrams, circuits and biological figures hide the answer in details: where the ray bends, which resistors are in parallel, which arrow points where. Fix: trace the diagram with your pen before reading the options.

4. Falling for the "almost right" option

Board options are designed around misconceptions. Two options can both look plausible. Fix: ask what exact word makes the wrong option wrong (for example, "all" versus "some", "increases" versus "decreases").

5. Changing a correct answer at the last second

Second-guessing hurts more often than it helps when you have no new information. Fix: change an answer only if you can name the specific error in your first reasoning.

6. Memorising the option letter instead of the concept

"It was B" is not knowledge. When the board rewords the question, you lose the mark. Fix: after each question, restate the concept in your own words.

7. Not treating Assertion-Reason as its own skill

  1. Read the stem twice before looking at the options.
  2. Predict the answer before reading the choices, then match.
  3. Eliminate with a reason, not a hunch. If you cannot say why an option is wrong, you have not eliminated it.

  5. Log every miss with its reason: concept, misread or slip.
  6. Revisit misses after a gap of two or three days.
