Solving five years of papers sounds thorough. Solving fifteen sounds heroic. But more years is not automatically better, and the honest answer depends on how much time you have and how the paper has changed.
Solve the last 3 to 5 board years. Treat the most recent years as your main practice because they reflect the current paper style. Go further back only for extra questions on a chapter you are still weak in, and only after you have finished the recent papers properly.
How many years of PYQs are enough?
For most students, the last three to five years is the sweet spot. Three years gives you a reliable feel for the paper. Five gives you enough variety that patterns become obvious. Beyond that, returns fall quickly: older papers were set under different patterns, and time spent on them is time not spent reviewing your mistakes.
Why do recent years matter more?
CBSE has shifted steadily towards competency-based, application-style questions, including case-based questions and Assertion-Reason MCQs. Recent papers reflect that style. An older paper heavy on direct recall can make you feel more prepared than you really are. Check the current paper structure and prioritise papers that match it.

Is it better to solve fewer years thoroughly or more years quickly?

When do older PYQs make sense?
Use them as top-up practice when a chapter still feels shaky after you have exhausted recent questions, or when you are ahead of schedule and want more variety. Skip older questions that clearly belong to a syllabus portion that has since been removed; always check against your current-year syllabus.
