PYQ Practice

CBSE Class 10 Science PYQs: what they are, why they matter and how to use them

Previous year questions (PYQs) are the closest thing to a rehearsal for your board exam. Used well, they show you what CBSE actually asks, how it words it and how many marks each idea carries. Used badly, they become a pile of solved papers that teaches you very little.

Quick answer

CBSE Class 10 Science PYQs are the questions that appeared in earlier board papers. They help because they show real question styles, marking depth and the chapters CBSE keeps returning to. Practise them chapter by chapter, attempt before you look at the answer, and revisit every question you miss.

What are CBSE Class 10 Science PYQs?

PYQs are questions taken from previous years' CBSE Class 10 Science board papers. Every question in them was set by the board, in the board's wording, for the same syllabus you are studying. That makes them different from guess papers or publisher question banks: nobody is predicting what CBSE might ask, because CBSE has already asked it.

A Science paper mixes formats: MCQs (including Assertion-Reason), very short, short and long answer questions, and case-based questions. Solving PYQs means meeting all of these in their real form.

How do PYQs help in board preparation?

They do five jobs that a textbook cannot do:

CBSE has also moved towards competency-based questions, which ask you to apply a concept to an unfamiliar situation. PYQs from recent years are the best practice for exactly this, because they reflect the current style. See the exam pattern explained for the paper structure.

Do exact PYQs repeat in the board exam?

Do not count on the same question appearing word for word. What repeats is the concept and the style: the same chapters, the same kinds of reasoning, the same diagram-based or numerical patterns. Students who practise PYQs are not memorising answers; they are getting comfortable with what the board likes to test. That is why understanding the explanation matters more than remembering the option.

How should you practise PYQs?

In short: go chapter by chapter first, attempt every question before checking, review each mistake, and only then move to full papers. The full method is in how to practise Class 10 Science PYQs, step by step. Three related decisions are worth reading before you start:

When should you start solving PYQs?

Start a chapter's PYQs as soon as you have finished studying that chapter once, not after the whole syllabus. Early PYQs will feel hard, and that is the point: they show what you did not really learn. Full papers come later, once most chapters are covered. Why practise PYQs on MindVsYou instead of a PDF?

A PDF gives you questions and leaves everything else to you. On MindVsYou, real CBSE Class 10 Science PYQs (2022–2025) are organised by chapter and subtopic, arrive one at a time in a chat-style flow, and objective questions are marked instantly with an explanation. For written questions you attempt first, reveal the model answer and rate yourself. Your accuracy is tracked chapter by chapter, and the questions you missed come back for revision. If you prefer paper, you can also download a whole past paper with its answer key, or printable chapter-wise sets.

Frequently asked questions

What does PYQ mean in CBSE?

PYQ stands for previous year questions: questions that appeared in earlier CBSE board exam papers. Practising them shows you the real question styles, marking depth and frequently tested chapters.

Are PYQs enough to score well in Class 10 Science?

PYQs are the most exam-relevant practice, but they work best alongside your textbook (especially NCERT) and school notes. Learn the concept first, then use PYQs to test and sharpen it.

How many years of PYQs should I solve?

Aim for the last three to five board years, giving more weight to recent papers because the paper style has shifted towards application-based questions. See our dedicated guide for the reasoning.

Should I solve PYQs chapter-wise or as full papers?

Chapter-wise first, while you are still covering the syllabus, then full papers under timed conditions in the last weeks before the exam.
